After the memorable Champions League win, Liverpool players were back to pre- season training as from last Saturday, where the first group of players took on the dreaded lactate tests. With the notable presence of Oxlade-Chamberlain , Joe Gomez and Rhian Brewster who are returning from long term injuries. With a quiet transfer window it seems Klopp is planning to call on academy players this season. Klopp insisting that having back the injured players is like having new signings. Later in the week Divock Origi and Lovren joined in the training and the biggest news yet was Origi signing a new contract after having an impactful season.
Liverpool took on Tranmere for the first game of the pre-season where Klopp’s style of play was notable from the beginning. First half players comprised of Mignolet, Clyne, Philips, Gomes, Larouci, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Lallana, Kent, Wilson and Brewster. Nathaniel Clyne opened the scoring before Brewster’s doubled in the first half. Brewster was impressive and showed why Klopp has a liking to him. He had that instinctive poacher presence in the final third and one could see the glimpses of skill and talent that he could offer. I was also impressed by the young left back Larouci, his runs were well timed and his crosses were class too. Reminded me a bit of Robertson- very energetic! There was fluidity in play and the youngsters showed a lot of talent.
In the second half Klopp selected an entirely different starting 11 with Origi as captain. The team comprised of Jaros at goal, Hoever, Matip, Johnstone, Lewis, Fabinho, Jones, Woodburn, Duncan and Glatzel. Again there was display of talent and fluidity. It was again a combination of play from the academy players that resulted in the fourth goal by Curtis Jones. Origi was impressive in the half, he looked sharp and eventually got his goal and finally Duncan wrapped up the 6-0 win. A great start to pre-season with Klopp acknowledging seeing a lot of positives in the performance.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of Brewster and the youngsters with the rest of the squad expected in the coming weeks.
Another football season is upon us and I can’t wait!
