The Weekend that was in Sports

This past weekend was an eventful one that saw Liverpool’s unbeaten run come to an end, matches in Italy postponed due to Coronavirus and of course the El Clasico that brought a tie in terms of overall wins between Real Madrid and Barcelona-96 wins each and the Carabao Finals at Wembley.

In the words of Peter Drury…”how greedy are Watford..” fans and rival fans alike were all at awe when Liverpool lost 3-0 to bottom three team Watford! The Reds saw a 44-match unbeaten run – and an 18-game winning streak – brought to a halt by Nigel Pearson’s men in a performance that I could term as the worst so far this season! So what was the problem? Liverpool started the game with no urgency, with Henderson out with an injury the midfield was completely non existent. Even more surprising was the defensive performance, a situation not helped by the absence of Joe Gomez, rested as a precaution, and replaced by Dejan Lovren who in this game had one of those days of his! From there it was all shambolic with Virgil and Trent having their worst performances too. It was an all round poor performance from the Reds.

The front three on the other hand were just toothless and managed only one shot on target- Atletico anyone? We must give credit to Watford for putting up a fantastic show! They were the better team in all areas with Sarr having a brilliant performance compared to the poor one he had earlier in the Season at Anfield.  So whats next for Liverpool? In Van Dijk’s words ”we have to strike back immediately..” with Chelsea tie on Wednesday, then Bournemouth in the weekend and then another big test at Anfield against Atletico, looking forward to see how the Reds respond. Nevertheless, they are still favorites to win the EPL this season and I’m sure one loss won’t get their eyes off the price!

Later in the evening  saw another edition of the El Clasico where history was made with Real Madrid’s protege Vinicius jr as the youngest goal scorer in history of the fixture at the age of 19 and 233 days! Barcelona now 1 point behind Real with the same goal difference! The La Liga race is really getting tight at the top with the following pack of Sevilla, Getafe, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad all within 1 point of each other!

Finally a worrying situation in Italy where Serie A fixtures were postponed due to Coronavirus! The biggest clash of the weekend between Juventus and Inter was postponed. Also affected were matches at Udinese, AC Milan, Parma and Sassuolo.

With the wide spread of the virus it is worrying situation for sporting events that are coming up like the 2020 Olympics which is set for July, the Euros set for June, the Six Nations tournament and the F1. This will also affect the qualifiers to these competitions with countries trying to take precautions to avoid the rapid spread of the virus.
