Ederson errors hand Manchester United win over City at Old Trafford!
It was truly a fantastic display by the Red devils who were the better team! Manchester City were a shadow of themselves and when they fell behind through a Bruno Fernandes free kick that was met by Anthony Martial whose low shot squeezed through past Ederson. We expected City to respond in the second half but they just could not. The absence of Kevin De Bruyne was visible with City lacking the intensity and control followed by sloppy passes all round. Despite having majority of the possession City were toothless in front of goal, they only had 4 shots on target!!
In the final minutes of the second half another Ederson’s sloppy throw fell to McTominay whose 35 yard shot met an empty net to the delight of the United faithful !
Bruno Fernandes again showed his quality, he did light up Old Trafford anytime he was on the ball. Since his big move to United he seems to have just fitted in perfectly and made the team much better. The question though is how sustainable is his impact alone going forward? Will we see him play alongside Pogba in the near future? Another standout performance was by Aaron Wan Bissaka who really turned up for this game, he managed to neutralize Sterling and also managed to run forward and put in some crosses in the box.
Sunday’s victory means United recorded their first league double against City since 2009/10 season and they are well in course for a Champions League spot. Over the weekend both Tottenham and Wolves dropped points, while Arsenal and Chelsea came away with vital wins. However, victory for the United means they remain fifth in the table, just three points behind Chelsea in fourth. Meanwhile, Wolves and Sheffield United trail United by two points and Spurs are four behind. It means the race for the top 5 positions is still on and it will get more interesting in the coming weeks!
On the other hand, this result means that Manchester City are now 25 points behind Liverpool with less than 10 games to go! It also means that Liverpool are now just TWO wins away from being Champions again dependent on the City vs Arsenal game tomorrow. City’s title hopes are pretty much over and it showed in their performance that lacked mental grit, urgency and fight.
Pep seems to have put all his eggs in the Champions League basket!!
