After 14 games two teams remain unbeaten, Manchester City and Liverpool!
Liverpool were at home against Everton . Lets start from the beginning the earlier London derby had all the ingredients of a full on rivalry; hard tackles, over the top goal celebrations, yellow cards and and ofcose good old pushing and shoving. Arsenal were dominant from the beginning leaving Spurs shaky at the back. They just couldn’t contain them! After 10 minutes Arsenal were rewarded a penalty where Aubameyang converted. Later Eric Dier headed Ericksen’s free kick into the net making it 1-1 after 30 minutes leading to a confrontation between Spurs players and Arsenal players at the corner flag. After a few minutes sanity was restored and you could tell this derby was far from over!
In the 34th minute Spurs get a penalty after Son was brought down by Holding and Kane coverts hence 2-1 at half time. It was a matter of who wanted more and Spurs looked a shadow of themselves from last time out when they thrashed Chelsea but hey its the Premier League! Second half saw again a dominant performance by Arsenal and were awarded in thee 56th minute by a fantastic and instinctive finish from Aubameyang who hit Ramsey’s flick on the first touch leading at an explosive celebration at the Emirates: the fans were on full voice!
This was later followed by a show of who’s boss by Arsenal. Spurs couldn’t get a foot in the game! There was more to come and in the 75th minute Alexendre Lacazette squeezed in a shot via Dier’s shin past Loris after a mishap by Floyth who was robbed off possession in the buildup. It couldn’t get worse for Spurs and Dier, but it did! Dier received his matching orders after receiving a second yellow card and Arsenal scored their 4th goal via Torreira. At this point there was no coming back for Spurs and London was painted red atleast until the next battle!
I was particularly impressed by Torreira he was a machine in the midfield and controlled Arsenal’s play. So Manchester United is in Arsenal’s future while Tottenham has Southampton.
On the Merseyside it was a bizarre one to say the least! Liverpool welcomed an improved Everton to Anfield. It was a tale of missed chances in both ends. Klopp opted for the 4-2-3-1 formation with Firmino playing the No. 10 role and Salah as the striker. Personally I’m very skeptical with this formation in that Firmino performs better as a false 9 and Salah at the wing! Everton should have scored in the 4th minute after Yerri Mina’s header went wide. Mane missed a couple of chances. Richarlison couldn’t convert after being face to face with Alisson. It was really an open game in both ends but lacked the quality in the final third.
Liverpool really looked average and toothless! To be honest that’s how we have been recently, don’t let me start on the PSG GAME!!
Alisson and Gomez kept Liverpool in the game after saving Andre Gomes point blank header from crossing the goal line. Shaqiri also missed a great opportunity when he was one on one with Pickford. The second half began with the same pace and Salah’s curling opportunity skewed away from goal summing up his disappointing performance. Firmino also misfired a couple of chances. At this point i was frustrated and was beginning to settle for draw. Origi was introduced in the dying moments of the game which later saw his effort hit the bar! Now cometh the moment in the 96th minute where Van Dijk’s slicing effort aimlessly found its way to the crossbar where Pickford’s effort to handle the ball backfired and found its way back in play and on Origi’s head! Its was really one of those bizarre and weird mishaps and it just seemed like the football gods were on Liverpool’s side!
And apparently the last time Everton won at Anfield, Trent Alexernder Arnold was one year old!!
At this point Anfield was on full voice and Klopp was running in the pitch! 3 points in the bag and the chase on Man City continues! So far the best derby have watched in terms of late goals and passion! Liverpool really have to improve in terms of attack and the Kop has to be in full voice for the game against Napoli because its a must win!
Next Burnley and Bournemouth both difficult games. Up the Reds we go again!
